An apron’s function is to protect the wearer’s garments and it is often associated with labor. What happens when those aspects are removed? Utilizing a sheer button-up shirt, I recreated the apron in a material that is more delicate than the layer worn underneath. As a result, the garment loses its original intention of protecting and reveals the vulnerable inner layers of the wearer. The juxtaposition of the wearer’s subtle form and the assortment of clothing tags reveals the human qualities behind the manufactured garment industry. The tags label the garment. This project led me to question: What other information could be included in the tag, giving it a richer story?
